works by Mark Esper
September 10th-October 16th
Opening Reception: Friday September 10th 7-9
The Front Room, in collaboration with Dam Stuhltrager and Naked Duck Gallery, is proud to present "Gizmology," a collection of electronic installations by Mark Esper. Esper has shown previously in Williamsburg at Dam Stuhltrager and Front Room, to much acclaim. This fall he has created new installations specific for each gallery.
Esper is known for his artwork using electromagnetic devices, infrared sensors, light emitting diodes, and a wide array of mechanical and electronic contraptions. These sculptures utilize the physical properties of electromagneticism, gravity, light and sound as metaphors for human relationships.
At the Front Room Esper will show "Gathered Voices," a device in which suspended electromagnetic pendulum attract and repel each other in self-organizing patterns. Speakers amplify a dialogue only as the corresponding head passes over it, triggering a few words from a poetic dialogue. Esper describes "Gathered Voices" as an exercise in self-organizing form through the use of coupled oscillators. It generates a sort of music from a variety of recorded voices.
Esper, ever the mad scientist, points out that "the form of our relationships are not unlike the behavior of matter when it exchanges energy in the form of heat or electrical potential."
